What is oral medicine?

Oral medicine refers to the oral health care of patients with chronic, recurrent and medically-related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region. It integrates medicine and dentistry to promote optimum health of patients. So, oral medicine goes above and beyond just examining teeth and gums. Rather, it utilizes available diagnostic techniques for the diagnosis and non-surgical management of medically-related oral disorders and conditions, including salivary gland disorders, oral mucosal diseases, and orofacial pain disorders to ensure that your good oral health continues to support and promote good overall health.

What does oral medicine mean to me?

At Penn Dental Medicine, our student doctors are en route to becoming Doctors of Dental Medicine (DMD). Our focus, both individually and as an institution, is on viewing dental medicine as an integral component of medicine. We are concerned with the overall picture of health, rather than dentistry in isolation.
