Dental hygiene services include preventive and diagnostics services, including assessment of oral health conditions, removing calculus and plaque, applying preventive materials to the teeth (fluoride and sealants), taking x-rays, and teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies.

How are cleanings performed?

At Penn Dental Medicine, student doctors perform all of our cleaning services, supervised by our faculty. The students use the highest quality materials, and only evidence-based techniques and materials.

What can I expect during my cleaning?

During a typical cleaning, your student doctor may go through three different stages of services. First, diagnostic services may involve the updating of your medical history, oral cancer examinations, evaluation of gum tissue, or X-rays. Preventive services typically involve some combination of the following:

  • Removal of plaque and tartar
  • Stain removal
  • Fluoride application
  • Polishing teeth
  • Cleaning and adjustment of dentures, if applicable

Finally, your doctor may provide educational services, including brushing and flossing instructions and any recommendations for future treatment.

How often should I schedule cleanings?

The Academy of General Dentistry recommends that you schedule a dental cleaning at least twice a year or as often as directed by your student dental care provider.

How can I maintain my cleaning?

In between your visits, you can maintain the health of your teeth through brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet low in sugar can help to promote the health and hygiene of your teeth.
